Golden Gas Announces Open Season for Joy Station Storage Project in Kansas

TULSA, Okla., June 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Golden Gas Service Company (“Golden Gas”) today announced the launch of a non-binding open season to solicit market interest for up to 2.4 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of firm natural gas storage service at its planned Joy Station Natural Gas Storage Project (“Joy Station” or the “Project”), a new intrastate high-deliverability salt cavern facility to be located in Kiowa County, Kansas.

The open season begins today, Monday June 16, 2025 and will run through Friday, July 18, 2025. Golden Gas invites interested parties to submit non-binding bids for storage capacity to support the commercial development of the Project. Only parties who participate in this non-binding open season will be eligible to participate in a future binding open season and to enter into definitive precedent agreements.

Joy Station will offer firm storage service with high injection and withdrawal flexibility, designed to meet the growing needs of LDCs, power generators, marketers, and industrial users throughout the Midcontinent region. The Phase I design capacity includes up to 2.4 Bcf of working gas with injection and withdrawal capabilities of up to 160,000 Mcf per day, subject to final engineering and permitting. The facility is anticipated to achieve capacity of up to 9.6 Bcf of working gas and 640,000 Mcf per day upon completion of Phase IV, accounting for greater than 25% of natural gas storage deliverability in the state of Kansas.

The facility is strategically located at the geographic and commercial center of the Midcontinent, with interconnects planned to multiple major intrastate and interstate pipelines, including Southern Star, Cheyenne Plains, KGS, Northern Natural, ANR, and PEPL. The site has received favorable geological review and is on track to receive its Class I injection and storage permits from the Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE) this summer. The Project will operate as an intrastate facility under a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity issued by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC).

“This open season represents the next step in bringing a new source of flexibility and reliability to the Kansas and Midcontinent markets,” said Alan Staab, President and CEO of Golden Gas. “Joy Station’s location, performance profile, and interconnectivity are tailored to help customers manage volatility and optimize supply portfolios in both peak and off-peak periods.”

Golden Gas expects to make a final investment decision (FID) following the conclusion of the open season and the completion of its state permitting process. Service is targeted to begin in Q2 2029.

Interested parties must execute a mutual confidentiality agreement (CA) prior to receiving bid instructions and access to confidential project documents. The CA, public notice, and contact information are available at:
