October is Energy Efficiency Month, an opportunity to highlight the simple steps customers can take to reduce energy use, as well as the programs and resources Georgia Power provides throughout the year to help make homes more comfortable and energy efficient. From income-qualified assistance and free home energy improvements to rebates, personalized recommendations and online energy-management tools, customers have several options for saving energy and money.

Georgia Power understands that energy costs are an important part of every family’s budget, and the company works every day to identify savings for customers and keep electricity affordable in Georgia. Earlier this summer, the typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month began seeing approximately $50 in annual savings as a result of lower fuel costs. The company has also committed to stable, predictable rates through at least 2028 following a base rate freeze announced in 2025. Additional savings are expected beginning in 2029, when the typical residential customer is expected to save approximately $15 per month, or about $180 annually, due to the company’s strategic approach to managing growth, which is lowering costs for residential and small business customers.

Quick energy efficiency tips for cooler months:

  • Check Insulation and Seal Leaks: Proper insulation in attics and walls keeps warm air in and cold air out. Weatherstripping doors and windows is a simple way to prevent drafts and reduce energy waste.
  • Think Thermostat: Keeping your thermostat at or near 68 degrees helps balance comfort and cost. Avoid turning the unit off completely, which can lead to higher energy use when reheating. Install a programmable thermostat that automatically adjusts the home’s temperature settings when you are away from the house and save up to $100 a year in energy costs, plus up to $150 in Georgia Power rebates.
  • Let the Sun Shine In: Open blinds and shades during the day to naturally warm your home. Close them at night to reduce heat loss through windows.

Energy-efficiency resources available to customers:

  • Free in-home energy audit: An energy adviser completes a visual walk-through and provides personalized recommendations to help the customer identify potential energy-saving improvements.
  • Home Energy Improvement Program (HEIP): Customers may be eligible for rebates covering 50% of qualifying improvement costs, up to $1,850 for single-family homes and $1,250 for multifamily units. Eligible improvements include insulation, duct sealing, HVAC maintenance and smart thermostats.
  • My Power Usage: The My Power Usage tool empowers most customers to track and manage their energy consumption with hourly, daily and monthly monitoring. Customers can view trends, download usage history and receive customized notifications to stay informed. Threshold Alerts help customers stay within their energy budget by notifying them when they exceed their target usage, with both monthly and daily notifications available.

Assistance programs for customers who need additional support:

  • Income-Qualified Discount: Georgia Power customers receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), participating in Housing Choice Voucher programs (formerly known as HUD or Section 8), or income-eligible seniors with a combined household income of 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines or less, may qualify for an Income-Qualified Discount of $33.50 per month. Learn more at GeorgiaPower.com/EnergyDiscount.
  • Energy Assistance for Savings & Efficiency (EASE): Income-qualified customers may be eligible for free home energy improvements completed by qualified contractors, helping make homes more comfortable and energy efficient.
